Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is abandoning from a significant election campaign promise to introduce electoral reform to Canada.
He told the new Minister of Democratic Institutions Karina Gould that changing the electoral system would no longer be in her mandate.
In his publicly available mandate letter to Gould, he said neither a clear preference or consenus for a new electoral system had been reached despite tremendous work by a House of Commons Committee.
Trudeau goes on to say a referendum on electoral reform would not be in Canada’s interest without a clear preference or question.
