Tri-Communities Celebrate Canada Day

Thousands of people are expected to gather in downtown Moncton today to help celebrate Canada’s birthday.

There will be activities throughout the day for the whole family and Director of Tourism and Events for the City of Moncton Jillian Somers says several great musical acts will perform at night.

“The big ticket is the Whoa Canada! main stage which kicks off at 5PM, we’re thrilled to have Steven Page with Odds singing some hits from the Barenaked Ladies days obviously, as well as Laurence Jalbert, another awesome artist, and Moncton’s own Monoxides coming in for another show this year,” says Somers.

She says it’s important that you plan for the weather though.

“So we’re asking that people plan ahead, look at the forecast, plan accordingly, bring bottled water, bring sunscreen, plan to take some breaks in some shaded areas,” says Somers. “We’re working really closely with our partners with first aid services to make sure that people stay hydrated and are taken care of.”

She says they usually get quite large crowds in the downtown core for Canada Day, we’ve had “well over 10,000 people anywhere up to 15,000 people we’ve seen in the past who come out to enjoy the events throughout the day with the concert.”

Somers continues, “and then obviously with our three communities participating in the fireworks, so there’s easily 12,000 to 15,000 that we’re expecting downtown this year.”

The night will wrap up with the tri-communities fireworks display over the Petitcodiac River, beginning at 10 o’clock.
