Town Honours Longtime Community Volunteer

After 60 years of community involvement and selfless acts, Robert “Buzz” Betts has become a well-known member of the community, whether it be for his actions as a referee, a Sunday school teacher or one of the many other roles he has held since moving to Riverview in 1962.

On Monday night, Riverview Town Council recognized Betts’ service by honouring him with a certificate of appreciation.

Almost every seat in council chambers was occupied, with about 50 people in attendance to honour Buzz and his impact.

“Our Town is blessed by incredible leaders who care about their neighbours, who go above and beyond to make a difference, and as a result have built a quality of life that residents value today and will continue to enjoy for generations to come,” said Riverview Mayor Andrew LeBlanc.

Over the last six decades, Betts has carved out a detailed resume with feats that few can match.

They include being the first active president of Riverview Minor Hockey, leading the negotiation efforts with the Universite de Moncton to move players into a proper arena and acting as Master of Ceremonies for various events.

Still, on a night dedicated to the impacts of Robert Betts, Buzz would not take all the credit.

“For someone to be honoured like this, you’re honouring all the people that contributed to this person’s being,” said Betts, who fought back tears as he addressed council chambers.

“I have all the people that contributed to me, that taught me to think the way I think and act the way I act. So the honour goes to them, and I’m sharing it so thank you but let’s not forget where it comes from.”

Buzz is living with terminal cancer, but despite the circumstances, he remains optimistic.

“Keep smiling,” he said
