Tough Winter For Wildlife In NB

The cold and snowy winter in New Brunswick has made it extremely tough on wildlife.

Department of Natural Resources biologist Joe Kennedy says deep snow in the woods has meant that deer and moose are basically hiding from the elements.

“They would concentrate under mature softwood stands where there is some shelter from the elements… the snow is a bit shallower there and slightly warmer under that blanket of tree layer.”

Normally by the end of March, Kennedy says we have about a foot of snow on the ground but right now we have up to four feet of snow in some areas.

Given the deep snow, he estimates about 20 percent of the deer herd in the province may not survive the harsh winter.
