Thunderstorm watches and warnings across much of N.B.

Environment Canada has issued severe thunderstorm watches and warnings for most of New Brunswick, saying conditions are favourable for storms capable of producing strong winds, heavy rain and hail.

The agency’s Sunday evening advisory lists watches for Grand Manan and Coastal Charlotte County, Kent County, Kouchibouguac National Park, Fredericton and Southern York County, Oromocto and Sunbury County, Grand Lake and Queens County, Sussex and Kings County, Saint John and County, and St. Stephen and Northern Charlotte County.

Environment Canada said thunderstorms may produce wind gusts near 90 km/h, hail between one and two centimetres in diameter and rainfall rates up to 25 millimetres per hour.

The agency warned that heavy rain can cause flash flooding and sudden drops in visibility.

The advisory also noted that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year and urged people to move indoors if they hear thunder.

According to Environment Canada, severe thunderstorm watches and warnings are issued when conditions are favourable for storms capable of producing damaging wind, hail or rain.

The alerts are in effect until later Sunday evening.
