With flood season just on the horizon the River Watch program for this year has been launched which means river ice observers will be out and regular water level forecasts will be issued.
The Department of Public Safety’s Paul Bradley says the amount of water in the snow pack through the St. John River basin overall is 57-percent below normal, however, he says the most important factor when it comes to possible flooding is weather.
“If we get like we did last year, and we had a pile of snow last year, and we get a slow melt, you know maple syrup weather, good melt during the day cooling down to freezing at night and everything melts slowly, we might not see problems,” says Bradley.
He says this time of year they geat up significantly because this is the time of year they generally see rising waters and possibly flooding.
Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Stephen Horsman says he strongly encourages those who live or work near waterways to take extra care and have an emergency plan in place.
