The Feds Support New Brunswick’s Seasonal Workers

The Trudeau Liberals addressing the gaps in employment insurance payments for seasonal workers.

At a fish plant on the Miramichi Bay, the Minister for Families, Children and Social Development, Jean-Yves Duclos, announced changes to the EI system to address the serious challenges faced by seasonal workers.

Duclos says the government will invest approximately $189 million in a new pilot project to provide up to five additional weeks of EI support to eligible workers in 13 targeted regions.

The extra five weeks of benefits will be available to eligible workers in seasonal industries who start a benefit period between August 5th 2018 and May 30th 2020.

The federal government will also provide up to $41 million over two years to all provinces and territories through Labour Market Development Agreements to provide skills training, wage subsidies and other incentives to workers in seasonal industries.
