The Feds Aim To Eliminate Early Release For Eligible Violent Offenders

The Federal government wants to make changes to statutory release–the law where eligible high-risk offenders who reach the two-thirds part of a fixed sentence can serve out the rest in a halfway house.

Fundy Royal MP Rob Moore, who is also the Regional Minister for New Brunswick, says Canadians are alarmed when repeat violent offenders leave prison before serving their full sentence.

He says their has to be justice not only for those who committ crimes but for victims and communities and this change will live up to Canadian’s expectations that when someone committs a crime they actually serve that time.

Moore says we know that Canada in the past had a justice system that was too soft and did not respect victims.
