The town of Sussex is asking residents for their two cents when it comes to Sunday shopping in the community.
The town has a survey up on its website and is encouraging residents to give their thoughts about the issue.
The current bylaw allows businesses to only open between the hours of noon and 5 p.m. on Sundays.
Chief administrative officer Scott Hatcher tells us some retailers got in touch with them in December and because Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve fell on a Sunday, they asked that council give them some consideration about extending those hours on those busy days.
“What we had done as a result of changing the bylaw in December 2017 was develop a process to facilitate community engagement, whether or not it’s necessary to make further changes to the bylaws,” says Hatcher.
The survey has been online for several weeks and Hatcher says they’ve already received hundreds of responses.
“The last time we looked … it was in excess of 600 replies so far to the survey,” he says. “We’ll compile the results so that they can have a look at whether or not there’s any general interest in the community to perhaps extending the hours different than we have currently.”
Hatcher says if that’s chosen by council then they’d begin the process of doing a bylaw amendment to adjust to the needs of the community.
