A building formerly used for livestock auctions in Sussex has gone up in flames.
Emergency crews were called to Park Street around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Sussex Fire Chief Tony Reicker said crews knocked down the fire within 25 minutes, but the building was a total loss.
“We had five apparatus that responded and approximately 16 members to that fire,” Reicker said in an interview.
Reicker said the building was vacant at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.
The Sussex & Studholm Agricultural Society held livestock auctions in the building until 2020.
Rocky Price, CEO of the society, declined to comment Wednesday, noting they lease the building from CN.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, according to Reicker.
“In this case, the Office of the Fire Marshal has been consulted about this particular address,” he said.
RCMP Sgt. Luc Samson also confirmed that the fire remains under investigation.
Samson told our newsroom that it is too soon to say whether the blaze was suspicious.
