Surfer Antony Colas Tackles The Tidal Bore Five Years Later

A surfer from France returned to Moncton five years later to once again surf the tidal bore on the Petitcodiac River.

Antony Colas last visited Moncton in July 2013.

He made the decision to return this month for a fall surf and to see the beautiful autumn colours.

His trips down the Petitcodiac River this time were even more exciting, “There is around 20 to 30 per cent more width and water in the river in terms of power of the bore. For me, it is quite obvious. Whenever the Bridge will be finished in 2020, I would assume the river is going to gain another 30 to 50 per cent.,” Colas says.

During one surf this week, he rode and chased the wave for one hour and 13 minutes straight, going all the way from Dover to Riverview, “That is about 16 kilometres, which is a personal record. I have never gone that long on the Bore that long ever.”

Colas says, “50 per cent of the time you’re in front of the wave, and 50 per cent of the time you’re beyond the wave chasing it, because there is no more than 16 inches of water, and my fin drags. Whenever it is shallow, I stay behind,.”

Colas will be at the Dieppe Book Fair from October 18-21 to talk about his book “Mascaret”
