State funeral for former NDP leader

A state funeral will be held for long-time federal NDP leader Ed Broadbent, who died on Jan. 11.

The funeral will take place in Ottawa on Jan. 28, the prime minister’s office announced on Monday.

“It will give Canadians an opportunity to salute Mr. Broadbent’s contributions to public life and offer their condolences,” said a news release.

Broadbent led the NDP from 1975 until 1989 and served as a member of Parliament for nearly 24 years.

He also established the Broadbent Institute, an Ottawa-based think tank.

State funerals are public events held to honour and commemorate present and former governors general, present and former prime ministers, and sitting members of the Ministry.

Any eminent Canadian may also be offered a state funeral at the discretion of the prime minister.
