SportsDome Complex Temporarily Shut Down After Fire Saturday Night

21 Moncton Firefighters battled a blaze at the Dundee SportsDome yesterday evening for about three hours, according to Platoon Chief Paul Bruens.

He says they were called to the building around 7 o’clock last night, to reports of thick black smoke pouring from the office complex.

Bruens adds the thick smoke made it harder for the firefighters to find the fire itself.

“Firefighters quickly and aggressively entered the building, we were able to contain the fire only to the front office,” says Bruens. “Although the office areas received extensive smoke and fire damage, there’s no actual heat or damage to the dome itself.”

“It was challenging because the dome needs to have power to maintain its stability because it’s inflated with air,” says Bruens. “So we had to cut the power to the office space, but we couldn’t cut the power to the dome, so NB Power allowed us to do that.”

Bruens says the building was unoccupied at the time, and there were no injuries.

Fire investigators are back on scene this morning to determine a cause.

SportsDome Management posted on their Facebook page and Website they would be closed until further notice.

Pictures of the fire were captured by Brian McDonald, and posted on Facebook by IAFF Local 999 Moncton Firefighters Association.
