Snowfall to continue into Monday night

New Brunswick’s latest winter blast is bringing lots of snow, but it’s not packing a punch like others we’ve seen in the past.

Up to 30 centimetres is expected to be on the ground when this system wraps up on Tuesday morning.

Snowfall warnings remain in effect for southern and southeastern New Brunswick.

“The system’s a little bit different than our other systems. It is gonna be mainly known for its long duration. So we aren’t really anticipating a really intense burst of snow, but more of the long lines of a low intensity snow for a long period of time. So we did see a little bit more intense snow overnight, but it has eased off, and it is supposed to ease off for most of the day today. We are anticipating it will re-intensify this evening and overnight, “Environment Canada Meteorologist Jill Maepea told our newsroom.

As for the winds, they aren’t expected blow wildly either. Maepea says they’ll range between 30 km/h and 50 km/h.

“Due to the nature of the snow, which is really light and fluffy, and we have these really cold temperatures, it’s quite easily being blown around. So although the winds aren’t strong, the visibility is being reduced in exposed areas. It’s that northeasterly wind,” Maepea stressed.

If you’ve been watching the forecast, this is the same system that pounded Toronto, Ontario and has brought the city to a standstill under around 50 centimetres of snow.

“We aren’t anticipating the amount of snow that Toronto had. They had a slightly different scenario set up, but it is a very large system, and it’s kind of spread out,” Maepea added.

This latest storm closed schools on Monday in districts including Anglophone South, Francophone South and Anglophone East.

It’s anticipated that there will be a lot of snow cleanup to do on Tuesday morning.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel and slow down on roadways that are snow-covered and snow-packed.
