Small Homeless Camp Causes Concern For Moncton Fire Department

A small homeless camp near the Trans Canada Highway between Mapleton Road and McLaughlin Drive has raised concerns for the Moncton Fire Department.

Fire Chief Conrad Landry says repeated calls have been received about smoke coming from the area.

There is no road access and he says firefighters must go down a steep embankment to get to the site.

“We want to talk to these individuals and find out if there is any support… if there’s anything we can offer from shelter to connect them with YMCA ReConnect or local organizations for the the proper help.”

Landry says contact is being made with the private landowner who will decide how to proceed.

He adds their last resort is always enforcement and they want to avoid removing the individuals if possible.

Landry says the department is aware of several other small encampments which are currently scattered around Greater Moncton.
