After some delay due to to pandemic, the tri-communities are moving forward with a a ban on single-use plastic bags.
Spokesperson for the city of Moncton, Elaine Aucoin says the objective is to get customers to bring their own reusable bag and reduce the amount of plastic bags going to the trash and having an environmental impact.
She says the extra time also allowed retailers to better prepare.
“The ban allows for the distribution of a paper bags at a fee so most retailers want to have some of those paper bags on hand and also have enough reusable bags to provide to customers,” says Aucoin
She says there are some exceptions to the rule, including plastic bags for things like bulk items and raw meat.
She says the bylaw is very similar to P.E.I.’s and that Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are also moving forward with the ban next month.
The bylaw comes into effect in Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview on October 1st.
