Despite racking up considerable overtime costs, Codiac RCMP is going to come in under budget for 2016.
That’s from Paul Van Iderstine, Treasurer of the Codiac Regional Policing Authority – the oversight body for Codiac RCMP.
He says this year, both the Baylee Wylie murder case, and the ongoing investigation into the disappearance of Jami Springer cost about $200,000 in overtime.
Van Iderstine adds in those situations, cost is not really an issue.
“Because you have to react to the situation,” says Van Iderstine. “I think in fairness the Police Authority looks at overtime on an ongoing basis, and I think we try to balance off the cost and availability of staff.”
Van Iderstine says there are other reasons for ongoing overtime costs.
“We have people that are out sick and we have to bring in manpower to make sure police services are available when they are required,” says Van Iderstine. “We have people that go to Court, and the Court case doesn’t occur on time, and those people have to stay and present their evidence.”
Van Iderstine says Codiac RCMP is generally responsible for reducing overtime costs, but if things get out of the control, the CRPA can step in.
