Shediac aims to become net-zero

The Town of Shediac hopes to become the first net-zero community in Canada.

Federal and provincial officials have announced more than $230,000 to help make that happen.

“The residents of Shediac are proud to be at the forefront of the sustainable and ecological energy efforts,” Mayor Roger Caissie said in a news release.

The community will use the funding to help create a net-zero strategy and decarbonization pathways.

Shediac will work with partners, consultants and others to develop scenarios and an action plan.

Federal officials will contribute more than $158,000 while the provincial government is spending $74,000.

Town officials said they hope to achieve net-zero status by 2035.
