It was a close race, a nailbiter at times, but Shawn Crossman emerged victorious as the next Mayor of Moncton.
“I am extremely honoured and privileged by what the citizens of Moncton have given me by being their next leader and their next mayor of this great city,” Crossman told our newsroom in an interview on Monday night.
Crossman will move into the Mayoral role following Deputy Mayor Paulette Theriault, who has been in an acting role since March 2025 after former Mayor Dawn Arnold was appointed to the Senate of Canada.
Crossman served in Ward 1 for three terms before deciding to run for Mayor in the May 11 municipal election.
He told our newsroom that it was always a goal to become the Mayor someday. “Yes, it was, but I’ve had challenges, both health-wise and challenges within City Hall that I’ve overcome, but I’ve always put my head down and worked hard for the citizens of Moncton, and this is what I wanted. I wanted to prove that I can be their leader and have a solid council behind us.”
There will be several new faces around the horseshoe when the new Moncton City Council is sworn in on June 1.
Greg Turner will join Marty Kingston as a Councillor at Large. Turner previously sat on council in the same role before running for provincial politics. He was the MLA for Moncton South until he was defeated in 2020.
There are two new City Councillors for Ward 1. They are Mike Gaudet and Felix Leblanc.
In Ward 2, Marc Leger and Kristin Cavoukian, who both beat out incumbent Daniel Bourgeois. Cavoukian is also a member of the Anglophone East District Education Council.
Juliana Mutch will join Bryan Butler as a Councillor for Ward 3. Dave Steeves was not re-elected.
In Ward 4, Paul Richard returns as City Councillor. He was re-elected with newcomer Kate Doyle.
Mayor-elect Crossman says his first task in this new role is to bring the council together for a full conversation about public safety.
“Looking at what our shortfalls are, what our challenges are, and how we can improve those shortfalls and challenges, and all work together. For everyone involved in this election, the number one concern has always been public safety. I want to make sure that we, as a council, address that and we start talking about it openly, with our public and with our citizens,” Crossman explained.
