Sharing Stories In Northwest Moncton

Avid readers who are looking for books can find them at a little library.

Located on Evergreen Drive in Moncton, it’s a handmade cabinet with shelves built to hold books inside.

Retired grade one teacher Kathy Dunn says this is the second year she has the library set up in front of her home for anyone in the community to use.

“You come and you find a book that you love. And you take it. There’s no obligation to leave a book or to bring a book and not even to return the book that you borrowed,” said Dunn. “Many people that are aware that I’m here, stop and put books in the library, and they donate a bunch. I even had a couple of young boys who had a banana box right full of children’s books and they put it on top of a skateboard because it was too heavy for them to carry. They rang my doorbell and said these are books for your library. I was just tickled that when they cleaned their bookshelf, they thought of the little library.”

The idea of the little library came about for Dunn during a visit to Los Angeles.

“It was years later when I saw one on Ashley Crescent near my home in Moncton and I was so happy. My husband got together with a few friends and they built me my own little library for Evergreen Drive. I take great pride in filling it up with books,” Dunn explained.

Dunn keeps an assortment of books in the little library including chapter books for children, children’s picture books and also cardboard books for younger children.

On the top shelf, you can find books designated for women, and the bottom shelf, things men might like to read.

Dunn added, “I just love reading and I love it when children become pleasure readers. If you visit a little library, then you are definitely a pleasure reader. You’re taking those books because you really want to read them.”
