A 24-year-old man who terrorized Moncton in early June will learn his fate today.
Justin Bourque has pleaded guilty to killing three RCMP officers and wounding two others and he will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars.
The Crown is seeking a 75 year prison term with no chance of parole – the maximum sentence since 2011 when the Criminal Code was amended.
Bourque’s defence lawyer David Lutz told his sentencing hearing that 50 years would be fair given that his client would be in his mid-70s before he could apply for parole.
In the final moments of his sentencing hearing on Tuesday, Bourque gave an emotional statement and did apologize for his crimes, stating “there’s nothing to be proud of. I did nothing good.”
Chief Justice David Smith is expected to sentence Bourque at 2-pm in Moncton’s Court of Queen’s Bench.
