Scam Affecting People Across Maritimes

A scam appears to be making the rounds across the Maritimes.

RCMP say people have been receiving phone calls from fraudsters posing as representatives from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Jean-Guy Richard says they threaten people into pre-paying fictitious debt.

“Eventually, they have to log on to a specific website. That’s where the fraudsters are trying to get the personal information, more importantly the banking information for the victim.”

He says the CRA would never ask for information about your passport, health card or driver’s license.

Richard says the scam has been around for quite some time but has resurged in recent weeks.

Authorities say people should contact the Anti-Fraud Centre if they encounter a suspicious email or phone call.
