Saint John man has completed an epic journey by dog sled from northern Manitoba to his home province.
Justin Allen travelled over 3,200 kilometres in the last few months with his canine companions and team.
They arrived in Saint John on Sunday, where they were welcomed home at an event in Rockwood Park.
Before his arrival, we asked Allen what stood out to him during his long journey.
“A highlight would be for me just watching my team and watching the dogs grow,” says Allen, “watching them have a great time and really enjoy what they’re doing.”
Allen says they ran out of snow about three weeks ago and had to trade in the dog sled for wheeled vehicles.
He says the unprecedented flooding in southern New Brunswick also made the last leg of the journey a bit challenging.
“We originally had one route that we were going to go, but all the ferries were closed, everything was flooded, so we couldn’t go that way,” he says, “so we’ve had to kind of go off our beaten path, so to speak, to find our way to make it to Saint John.”
Allen says there’s no way he could have done this journey without the support of many members of the community.
Now that he’s back home, Allen plans on opening a tour operation and race team called Boss Dog Expeditions next winter.
