Safety Tips For Heating Your Home During Cold Weather

With storm after storm bringing snow and cold weather to Moncton, residents are being reminded to pay attention to their electric heaters.

Steve Richardson is a fire prevention officer for the Moncton Fire Department, and he says you have to keep both baseboard and portable electric heaters clear of anything flammable.

He says curtains and toys could pose a risk if they are placed too close to a baseboard heater.

Richardson says you should keep curtains at least four inches away from your heaters, which means better circulation for warm air, and less risk of a fire.

You should also a keep a close eye on space heaters. Many of them have a “tip” feature, and he suggests testing it out, by turning the device on, and tipping it over and seeing if it shuts off automatically.
