Riverview Firepit By-Laws Remain Unchanged

A significant response to a firepit survey in Riverview.

Town Councillors discussed the results during a Committee of the Whole meeting last week.

Mayor Andrew Leblanc says the results were not surprising, adding “Ultimately, the feedback came back that everyone is pretty happy with the way things are right now, so Council has no plans to make any changes.”

Leblanc says Town Council had initially received a request from a couple of residents who wanted outdoor firepits banned, that’s why the survey was suggested.

“The process as it exists right now is working for our residents,” LeBlanc added. “We are happy with the way things are. The only change we made, is the homemade firepit, you do have to have it inspected. We’re moving that process online to make it a little easier for residents to apply for that inspection.”

The following recommendations were made at last week’s Committee of the Whole meeting:

  • Increase public communication on outdoor fire pits (important because residents may be burning things they shouldn’t and it is causing smoke problems for neighbours)
  • Create an online inspection application form (currently, if you use a homemade fire pit, it has to be inspected by the fire department – this recommendation just moves that process online)
  • That no changes be made to the existing by-law.
These will be brought forth at Riverview Town Council on May 9th.
