Riverview council says a local councillor breached the town’s code of conduct.
The town council made the finding on June 8 after reviewing an independent investigator’s report into one of Councillor Cecile Cassista’s social media posts.
Councillor Glenn Miller said the report confirmed a breach but noted there were extenuating circumstances that should be considered when deciding on corrective action.
Councillor Samantha Burke also supported the finding and said she did not believe Cassista acted with malicious intent.
The town council then discussed what steps to take. Miller proposed that Cassista complete social media awareness training, which will also be offered to all councillors.
Burke introduced an amendment requiring a written apology to the complainants.
Ward 3 Councillor Kelly Forsythe Preston said the apology must be public to address the impact on the complainants’ reputations.
Council approved the amended motion.
Cassista will be required to complete the training and issue a formal written public apology.
