Riverview councillor Glenn Miller is taking a three‑month leave from some council duties to focus on his mental health.
The Riverview town council approved the request during its June 8 meeting.
Miller told the council his 36‑year career with Riverview Fire and Rescue had a lasting impact on his well‑being.
“After 36 years with Riverview Fire and Rescue, it should come as no surprise to anyone that I paid a price with my mental health for that career,” Miller said.
He said he decided after speaking with his doctor over the past year and a half.
“I was determined that it would be best in my best interest to, when I retired, do a mental health reset,” he said.
Miller told the council he will remain reachable by phone and email while he is away, but he will not be in Riverview during the leave.
Because he will be outside the municipality, the council was required to vote on the request.
Councillor Cecile Cassista said supporting the leave was important given Miller’s long service to the community.
Several councillors, including Deputy Mayor Richard Blackstock, voiced support and thanked Miller for his work as a first responder.
The town council approved the leave unanimously.
Miller will be away from June 9 to September 7.
