Riverkeeper Confident Gov’t Funding Coming For Bridge

In an effort to help restore the river to its natural state, the Petitcodiac Riverkeeper plans to release salmon back into the waterway this year.

The organization will monitor what kind of contaminants are in the water and if the salmon will be edible once released back into the ocean.

Riverkeeper Daniel Bard says talks are also continuing over the main component of restoration – funding a bridge to replace the causeway.

“I think we’re going to have a federal announcement pretty soon that they will help out with the bridge with the province. Also, TransAqua should be doing something with their waste treatement facility. They are just waiting for the federal government,” he notes.

The Petitcodiac Riverkeeper obtained only one funding grant last year to carry out restoration projects but Bard says he’s more optimistic this year with applications to obtain four grants.
