Retail Council Warns Against Raising HST

The Retail Council of Canada is making clear what it thinks about the possibility of the H-S-T being raised…….It would hurt retailelrs.

There’s speculation it will be going up now that the provincial government doesn’t want to be required to hold a referendum beforehand.

Jim Cormier is Director of the Retail Council in the Atlantic Region and he points out retail accounts for 13 per cent of employment in the province and is an 11 billion dollar industry in New Brunswick. He adds the provincial economy isn’t all that robust at the moment and, generally, raising taxes puts a damper on economic growth.
