Renaming JMA Armstrong High/Salisbury Middle School

A new name for JMA Armstrong High/Salisbury Middle School.

Members of the Anglophone East District Education Council voted this week in favour of switching the name to Salisbury Regional School.

Council Member Alex Morton recommended that a letter be sent to the Education Minister with confirmation, adding “I would like to say this has gone on for the better part of two years. I agree that the building should have one name. It is one building, one school.”

He noted the ambiguity of Policy 409, “Unfortunately, it is the only mechanism we have. The process that was followed was imperfect, but the intent behind it was good. It was probably more inclusive than it needed to be, even going so far as having the students vote on the name of the building. I agree the external reporting could definitely have been better.”

The majority of the hundreds of students who voted were in favour of the renaming to Salisbury Regional.

“One thing I truly appreciate is how involved and how passionate my community can be. There are lots of things we can do to honour John Melvin Adair Armstrong, but there is only one thing we can do to honour the wishes of the students,” Morton added.
