Referendum On Electoral Reform Will Cost Big Bucks

The Trudeau Government is promising legislation by next May on changing the way we vote in federal elections.

Questions have been raised about whether first past the post truly reflects the electorate when one party can win a majority government with less than 40 per cent of the vote.

Federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May says all this talk about holding a referendum is premature because no one knows what the question will be if you don’t know what the change in how we vote is finalised.

It’s estimated the cost of holding a referendum will be something like 300 million dollars. Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand says Elections Canada needs 2 years to prepare if the electoral system is changed. He also warns Canadians highly trust election system but this is very fragile and once you lose it, it’s very difficult to regain.
