A pilot project that studies the recycling habits of participants is celebrating its first anniversary today.
Participants drop off their recyclables at two locations in Moncton.
From there, Encorps Atlantic looks at things like when bags are dropped off, how many bags per visit, and how many containers are dropped off at a time.
Project Coordinator Tim Pidgeon says things are going very well in the 3 year project so far. They’ve reached their membership goal, with 2500 registered households, and they’ve been able to gather data on the consumer patterns, recycling patterns.
Pidgeon says one of the interesting things was the cash out rate. They were surprised to find that a large number of people have left their money in their accounts until a later date.
It is hoped that a redemption centre can be developed in the future in New Brunswick in order to increase recycling rates and public enthusiasm towards recycling.
