The Codiac Regional RCMP has reported a rise in concerns about panhandling throughout the Greater Moncton area, especially near roadways and intersections.
The RCMP said the rise in panhandling is linked to broader issues such as the cost of living, housing instability, and mental health struggles.
Authorities indicate that various factors have led to an increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness and seeking assistance on the streets.
“Panhandling on or near roadways presents significant risks both for the individuals panhandling and for drivers,” the RCMP said in a statement.
Officers are working to identify high-risk locations and are engaging directly with individuals to encourage them to access available community supports.
The RCMP is advising the public not to interact with panhandlers in dangerous areas, such as busy intersections, to protect both driver and pedestrian safety.
Instead, they suggest residents consider safe and sustainable ways to support those in need.
Mounties added that they remain committed to working with community partners to address the needs of vulnerable individuals while maintaining public safety.
