RCMP tow 44 vehicles, issue 160 tickets in Southeastern N.B.

Forty-four vehicles were towed and more than 160 tickets were issued during a three‑day RCMP traffic enforcement operation in Southeastern New Brunswick.

Police said the operation took place from October 16 to 18 in the Codiac, Petitcodiac, Richibucto and Sussex areas.

Tickets were issued under the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act, including 22 for using a handheld electronic device while driving, 32 for speeding and 12 for not wearing a seatbelt, according to the RCMP.

Officers also reported two arrests for impaired driving by drugs, one roadside suspension for alcohol impairment, and two arrests for driving while suspended. Three vehicles were found to be operating without valid insurance.

Police said 44 vehicles were towed, including two impounded for seven days after drivers were caught speeding more than 50 kilometres an hour over the limit.

Seventy cars were escorted to an inspection station, where 35 were towed, including 28 deemed unsafe.

“The focus of the RCMP Tactical Traffic Enforcement Unit is on behaviours that are the greatest risk to the public, whether it be driving behaviours or criminal activity,” said Sergeant Ghislain David in a release.

“We do enforcement operations like this across the province year‑round in an effort to increase road safety and to limit the number of dangerous drivers and unsafe vehicles on our roadways.”
