A man found dead inside a burned building north of Sussex is now the focus of a suspicious death investigation.
Sergeant Benjamin Comley with the Sussex RCMP said officers were called to a fire at a business on Route 10 in Coles Island at about 9:50 p.m. on June 11.
He said a 62‑year‑old man from Long Creek was found dead inside the building when police arrived.
“We are treating the death as suspicious in nature and continue to investigate whether criminality was a factor in the death,” Comley said.
Comley said an autopsy has been completed, but the results have not been released.
He said members of the New Brunswick Coroner’s office and the Office of the Fire Marshal are assisting with the investigation.
Comley said the building is believed to be a total loss.
“A Lot of the details are part of the ongoing investigation right now, but we do believe the building is a complete loss,” he said.
He said police do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.
Investigators are asking anyone with dash‑cam footage, surveillance video or eyewitness information from the area to contact the Sussex RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
