If you have recently returned to Canada, police may be paying you a visit to ensure you are self-isolating for 14 days.
Mounties say they have been asked by the Public Health Agency of Canada to help enforce the Quarantine Act.
Anyone who violates the act could face a fine of up to $750,000 and six months behind bars.
But Mounties say enforcement will focus on “education and encouragement” and arrests would be a “last resort”.
“Choosing to ignore mandatory isolation and quarantine orders is not only against the law, it’s also putting citizens, first responders, health professionals and the most vulnerable at risk of exposure to the virus. Collectively, everyone in Canada has a role to play to ensure compliance with isolation and physical distancing measures,” said RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki in a release.
The RCMP said checks will generally be limited to those who require “physical verification” after health officials have done initial verifications by phone, text or email.
