There are growing concerns over radon poisoning and residents are being encouraged to have testing done in their homes.
Health Canada estimates that 3,200 people a year across Canada die from lung cancer due to radon.
Project Manager for the Take Action on Radon campaign, Pam Warkentin says this gas could be in your home without you even knowing it.
“It’s a cancer causing gas that comes from the soil, and enters in our home through contact with the ground,” says Warkentin. “It’s radioactive, and so it decays, releases energy, and that’s what creates a health risk.”
Warkentin says New Brunswick is the province with the highest number of “homes above guidelines, so we’re trying to be proactive.”
She continues, adding that’s why they are hosting a radon information session tonight at the Kay Crossman arena starting at 7 o’clock.
