Public Health To Hold Debriefing Over Legionnaires’ Outbreak

New Brunswick Public Health will be conducting a debriefing following the recent legionnaires’ disease outbreak in the Moncton area.

The outbreak was declared over this week after 16 confirmed cases and there have been no fatalities.

Regional medical health officer Dr. Yves Leger says consultations will be held internally along with external partners involved in the investigation.

“In parallel with that, we will be working on a report which will also include recommendations moving forward on how to improve our response within public health and how we can try to prevent something like this from happening again,” he notes.

Dr. Leger didn’t want to say what might be in that report but he has stated that a registry of cooling towers in the city would have been helpful.

The province of Quebec actually has legislation surrounding cooling towers.

Dr. Leger says there is some accountability there, some requirements or at least a minimum amount of maintenance and testing.

The source of the outbreak was determined to be a cooling tower in a West End Moncton building but public health will not reveal the exact location.
