The provincial NDP say the recent supreme court ruling on end of life care is an important step forward in giving people more control over their lives.
Leader Dominic Cardy says the biggest concern is ensuring vulnerable groups are protected, and that a humane and caring approach is created.
Cardy says there’s no time to turn this issue into a political football, since change is coming within a year.
“This isn’t a question of when these rules have to be come up, or whether we agree with them or not,” says Cardy. “The Supreme Court has made it clear, they are the supreme authority in the land so the government of New Brunswick is going to have to sit down and develop legislation to fit New Brunswick.”
Cardy urges Premier Gallant to create an all party committee, that would also include representatives from medical professions and disabled rights communities.
He wants to see the province put their best minds to work to come up with an approach that respects individual rights above anything else.
