Provincial Health Department Warning Of Potential Health Risks Of Blue-Green Algae

The provincial Department of Health is warning New Brunswickers about the potential health risks of algae blooms in lakes and other bodies of water.

Acting chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell says while not all algae blooms are problematic, blue green algae can irritate the skin, eye and throat.

If consumed, she warns it could lead to more serious health effects.

The Department says people should keep an eye out for the algae before they get into the water, and avoid contact.

Young children and people with skin conditions may be particularly vulnerable, and pets and livestock shouldn’t consume blue-green algae, as it can be fatal.

The Department warns that boiling water with blue-green algae won’t remove the toxins, and it will remain unsafe to drink.
