Provincial Green Party Leader Glad To See Decrease In Greenhouse Gas Emissions In Atlantic Canada

The Provincial Green Party Leader agrees with a report from the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council that shows a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in this part of the country.

The report indicates a dip of 26 per cent since peak levels in 2004.

David Coon says numbers are down, but there is still work to be done.

He says, “Where we really need to make progress now is on how we get around in terms of our tremendous consumption of gasoline and diesel fuel.”

He is happy to see that something is being done, “We’re gradually taking some of the carbon out of our economy, so in New Brunswick for example, we’ve almost eliminated the use of oil for generating electricity, which is an important step.”

Coon says he was very encouraged that the Premiers and Governors of New England agreed to set a target to cut emissions by 35 to 45 per cent by 2030, while they were meeting in Newfoundland over the past two days.
