Provincial Funding For The SPCA Cut

As the provincial government considers whether it has to beef up its legislation to protect animals, the outgoing executive-director of the New Brunswick SPCA says the province already has some of the best legislation you’ll find anywhere and other provinces are calling here to see what we`re doing.

Hilary Howes says there is one change he would like to see which would compel owners to bring their pets to the door to be examined during the court of animal abuse investigations.

Howes says with all the publicity about treating animals better, he has seen an improvement.

He cautions the New Brunswick SPCA is saddled with a big deficit so enforcing any beefed up or new legislation would prove to be difficult to enforce, especially with a $40 thousand cut in provincial funding.
