Prolonged NB Drought Causing Some Wells To Go Dry

A prolonged drought is starting to have an impact on the water supply in parts of New Brunswick and some wells have gone dry.

Rain has been scarce throughout the summer months and it has remained dry so far this fall.

Val Leblanc, owner of Eastern Well Drillers in Shediac, says his business has been busy lately.

“Older, small diameter wells and shallow wells have gone dry. The standards that we use today aren’t the same that we used 30 or 40 years ago as far as the diameter of the wells and the depth of the wells,” he noted.

Leblanc says newer wells are more resilient to drought but he adds water demands are much higher now compared to 20 or 30 years ago.

In Greater Moncton, a city official says the water supply is in decent shape but only because the Tower Road reservoir is used in addition to the Turtle Creek reservoir otherwise water restrictions may have been necessary.
