Presence of cyanobacteria in Centennial park pond

The Centennial Park pond remains closed due to the detection of cyanobacteria.

Signs and notices have been posted throughout the park.

Visitors are asked to stay out of the water, keep their pets away, and not allow them to drink from the pond.

Kayaking, canoeing, and other recreational activities are also suspended until further notice.

Cyanobacteria were formerly described as blue-green algae.

According to the City of Moncton website, “Cyanobacteria are naturally occurring microscopic organisms found in both fresh and salt water. Under conditions such as warm water temperatures, high nutrient loads, and other influences, cyanobacteria can multiply quickly and create blooms. These blooms can sometimes produce harmful toxins.”
