Discussions will take place in Washington this week between Premier Brian Gallant and the Secretary of Commerce for the United States Wilbur Ross Jr.
Ross is a senior member of President Donald Trump’s cabinet and is responsible for negotiating the Softwood Lumber Agreement.
Gallant will be meeting with Ross in hopes of having New Brunswick excluded from recently imposed tariffs on softwood lumber.
The meeting between Ross and Gallant will also include discussion around the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Gallant says exports of softwood lumber to the US creates jobs in Canada and helps keep costs around construction competitive for American families.
Softwood lumber provides more than $1.45 billion to the provincial economy and employs over 22,000 people.
