Postal Workers’ Union ‘Encouraged’ By Withdrawal Of Lockout Notice

The postal workers’ union’s national director for the Atlantic region says they’re encouraged that Canada Post appears to have had a ‘change of heart’.

This is in response to word that the Crown Corporation has withdrawn its 72-hour lockout notice in an effort to help reach a deal with the union. CUPW’s Jeff Callaghan says they see this as a positive move not just for the negotiations but for Canadians as well, who now may be encouraged to start mailing again.

Callaghan thinks this should signal that the parties will start to negotiate more intensively.

“I think as long as Canada Post has rescinded their notice, we don’t have any intention of providing notice, so I think as long as that notice isn’t there that Canadians should be encouraged and start putting their mail back in Canada Post again.”

Callaghan says he’s optimistic a settlement can be reached and as long as the parties are talking that’s a good sign.

Canada Post says the fact that there will not be a lockout will allow them to focus on serious negotiations.
