Political debate for all five provincial parties

Shale gas and jobs for New Brunswick appeared to be the focus of last night’s English language debate on the CBC.

All five political leaders took part, from the Progressive Conservative, Liberal, NDP, Green and Peoples Alliance parties.

The main attack came from the NDP, with Leader Dominic Cardy drilling Liberal Leader Brian Gallant on his promise to spend $900 million on infrastructure in the province.

Premier Alward also questioned the Liberal leader, stating that the Liberal platform is not realistic.

On the subject of shale gas, the Tories are in favour of shale gas exploration in an effort to create jobs, while the Liberals want a moratorium, until safety issues are fully explored.

Green party Leader David Coon stated that the risks, costs and consequences to New Brunswickers far outweigh the benefits of shale gas.

People’s Alliance Leader Kris Austin dared Alward to put the question over a shale gas industry directly to the people in a referendum.

The debate lasted 90 minutes, and on Facebook and Twitter this morning, many who watched the debate have stated that they were most impressed by the NDP Leader.
