Poli-Sci Prof Expects Some Acclamation Wins In NB In Upcoming Municipal Election

Municipal elections will be held across the province on May 11th. Those interested in running, must have their nomination papers in by April 9th.

But Associate Political Professor at UNBSJ JP Lewis says it isn’t always a bad thing if a candidate wins by acclamation, “Sometimes the acclaimed candidates have a lot of experience and a long history in that position and voters are served just as well.”

Lewis does agree it is unfortunate though in a healthy democracy when there are open races and there aren’t enough candidates.

“It’s understandable though, there are a lot of offices and New Brunswick is a smaller province. I don’t think it is that surprising for smaller jurisdictions to have races that don’t attract a lot of candidates,” Lewis says.

New Brunswickers will go to the polls on May 11th, to elect municipal councils, as well as District Education Councils and Regional Health Authorities.
