Planned Fee Reductions Get Thumbs Up From Early Learning Centres

The Owner of Moncton’s Home with a Heart Early Learning Centre feels a new agreement that will see childcare fee reductions for families with preschool children is great news.

The Canada-New Brunswick Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement will see a 50 per cent reduction in out-of-pocket fees beginning June 1st for families with preschool-aged children at designated New Brunswick early learning centres and homes.

Janice Sutherland says currently childcare can sometimes be higher than your mortgage, “I think about when I was younger and I had children in childcare. It was very, very stressful and you always wondered whether it was worth the mother or the father, for one of them to stay home. Now, I think it is going to give everyone the option, if they want to go back to work, they have that option.”

She added the centres have received few details so far about exactly how the program will work and how fees will be provided.

“It has been a long time coming that they started looking at early learning centres as professionals and early learning for children and how important it is that they get this before they start school,” noted Sutherland. “Everybody should have access to it, not just the people who have jobs that they have enough money to pay for it.”

More information is expected in the first week of May.
