New Brunswick physicians are asking residents to do their part to help protect the health care system.
Dr. Mark MacMillan, president of the New Brunswick Medical Society, said while public health measures have ended, COVID-19 is still with us.
“New Brunswick physicians are concerned about our colleagues, our patients, New Brunswickers overall, and our health care system,” MacMillan said in a video posted to Twitter on Monday.
As of Tuesday, Horizon Health reported 119 COVID patients in the hospital, including 10 in an intensive care unit.
Vitalité Health said it has 73 COVID patients as of Monday, and 10 of them require intensive care.
According to the two health authorities, 541 health care workers are off the job due to COVID-19 — either because they tested positive for the virus or were a close contact to someone who did.
MacMillan said schools are also under pressure, with many children not fully vaccinated at this point.
“What we need is your help to protect our vulnerable populations and our health care system,” he said.
MacMillan asked New Brunswickers to keep wearing masks when appropriate and to get vaccinated if eligible.
“COVID-19 is still here, it hasn’t gone away. Let’s make sure your health care system stays here as well.”
